Anti-State Violence Campaigns

We live in a society structured by White Supremacy and exploitation under Capitalism, and our communities (which are mostly made up of Black, working class, and other oppressed folks) are often in crisis and defending themselves from mass criminalization, incarceration, gentrification, and displacement. A central part of our work is standing with and supporting these communities as they rise up against unjust conditions and State violence.

Justice for JaVario Eagle

On Dec. 12, 2015, JaVario Eagle was killed by 7 members of the Chattanooga Police Department no more than 15 minutes after he called for help during a personal crisis. CPD showed up, immediately escalated the situation, and murdered Mr. Eagle in front of his 5 year old daughter- shooting him multiple times in the side and back as he lay face down on the ground.

JaVario’s life mattered- he was a beloved family member, a well-known musician, and a respected community leader who founded Team 100 that works to stop violence in the community. CCJ supports JV’s family in their fight for justice. (Learn more)

Stop Police Violence

For over thirty years, Concerned Citizens for Justice has been organizing to stop police violence- including mass-criminalization, surveillance, and incarceration. Our organization was founded after the murder of Wadie Suttles by Chattanooga Police, to demand justice for the family and all victims of State violence.

We continue this legacy today as we educate, agitate, and organize around cases of police murder, brutality, and misconduct- toward democratic community control of the police and safety beyond policing. (Learn more)

Stop Ham. Co. Jail Expansion / Privatization

Ham. Co. Mayor Jim Coppinger is aggressively pursuing the complete privatization of the county’s jails through Corrections Corporation of America (CCA) and the construction of a new 600+ bed addition to Silverdale Correctional Facility (the CCA-operated jail) to replace the County-operated facility in downtown Chattanooga.

This new facility would allow the county to close the downtown jail- presumably freeing up prime real estate in the middle of the Tourism and “Innovation” districts. While claiming that no decision has been made about privatization and that requests for proposals have not yet been issued, Mayor Coppinger stated in response to a question from Commissioner Boyd that revealing the details of the potential cost savings of privatization could “hinder some negotiations.” (Learn more)
